Salt Lake City Hub's Tour Route 1

This particular Tour Route is a VFR round robin flight around the Lake Powell area beginning at the Page Municipal Airport in Page, Arizona. A newfound millionaire from Park City, Utah, purchased a new yacht and wants to identify a "good" location for his new "toy." These legs are easily flyable in the Mountain Air Beaver, but to make it "sporty," give it a try in a Cessna 172 or Cessna 182. Included is a WAC Chart providing information on the airports for this route. Have fun!!!

Download the WAC Chart here!

л = Difficulty Rating, according to MTN199 (1 = easiest, 5 = most difficult); The rating considers the entire leg, including both departure and arrival airports and their status with respect to runway length, type of runway, approach/departure requirements, etc. Other factors that are not included in the rating are type of aircraft, weather, etc.

Leg 1 - Page (KPGA) to Bullfrog Basin (UT07): лл
Time: 15:30 local time
Scenario: The owner of the boat first wants a tour of the Wahweap Marina (about 3 miles north of the Glen Canyon Dam) and before landing at Bullfrog Basin would like a tour of that area as well.
Navigation & Advisories: After flying over the Glen Canyon Dam and the marina, the rest of the leg can be flown either direct to Bullfrog Basin, or for a more scenic journey follow the main waterway. Keep in mind the airport is located about 1-2 miles up the road from the marina. The runway is paved and should not be a challenge.

Leg 2 - Bullfrog Basin (UT07) to Hite (UT03): лллл
Time: 16:30 local time
Scenario: After a quick "potty-break" at Bullfrog, the owner would now like to visit Hite and would like to fly as "low as you can" up the main channel of Lake Powell. Once at Hite, fly around the marina before landing.
Navigation & Advisories: Hite is situated on the north side of the Lake. It is here that the Colorado River becomes Lake Powell. The marina is situated on the south side of the lake, across from the Hite Airport. Be advised the WAC lists Hite as "hazardous" and therefore care should be taken. Runway length if 2200 feet. Beware of high density altitude, especially on the next leg. This is the challenging airport for this charter flight.

Leg 3 - Hite (UT03) to Halls Crossing (Cal Black Memorial U96): лл
Time: 17:30 local time
Scenario: After a brief meeting with the Marina Manager, the owner now decides to head down to Halls Crossing but would prefer and aerial tour of the mountains to the northwest first.
Navigation & Advisories: Depart Hite to the northwest and fly around the nearby mountain range. After passing through the two northernmost mountaintops, proceed southeast to Halls Crossing (Cal Black Memorial). Halls Crossing has a paved runway and should not be a challenge.

Leg 4 - Halls Crossing (U96) to Navajo Mtn (72V): лл
Time: 18:30 local time
Scenario: After a quick bite to eat, the owner would now like to head back to Page, but while en route about midway to Page, he receives a satellite phone call and now requests to divert to Navajo Mtn. As pilots, we never question those who charter our services, so onward we go.
Navigation & Advisories: Navajo Mtn is situated on the east side of Navajo Mountain. The mountain is the tallest point within a 20-mile area, so identifying it should not be difficult.

Leg 5 - Navajo Mtn (72V) to Page (KPGA): л
Time: 19:15 local time
Scenario: After picking up a friend of the owen, time to return to Page while the sun sets.
Navigation & Advisories: Depart Navajo Mtn around the north side of the moutain peak and follow the main channel of Lake Powell again to the west. Make a low-flying pass over Glen Canyon Dam, then bring the aircraft into the pattern at Page. If you are flying this leg in the winter, it will be night about 17:30 local time. Be aware of this in your timing.
