Cargo Route 5
Route By Verne Cotton (MTN005) Our CEO!
More OldSchool fun. What? More
DC-3s? Nope, going to a less responsive plane for this one...the
Convair 240! What a pig...makes it sporty. Thanks to Verne
Cotton, MTN005 - yes, the CEO! - for finding this route and the Convair
240!
More surplus propliners into the stable at PAJN. The DC-3s from Vintage Cargo 4 were a big success, now we got an even better deal on some Convair 240s. Ripped out the seats so they are ready to haul stuff. Get busy people!!
Cargo Route 5 should be flown in the Convair 240; however, any large radial propliner would work. If you can't be bothered to install the Convair 240, try a DC-4 or Connie.
Download the Convair from California Classics. There is a Convair 240 for FS2004 / Convair 240 for FSX / Even a Convair 240 for FS2000-FS98. No excuses...plane for every semi recent FS version. (oh, fs2k4 and FSX are the same file, don't be alarmed).
All airports are available in stock FSX and FS2004 base scenery. Addon Mesh is highly suggested in FS2004...FSX base mesh seems pretty good.
Use Real World Weather. JY endorses ActiveSky but you can use whatever real weather you need. The last leg to PAJN can be really tough in low weather.
Arrival Times are not as important on cargo routes. Fly whenever you get a plane full of stuff.
IFR flight is allowed on the cargo routes; however, 90% of the airports served DO NOT have an instrument approach. Plan accordingly and DO NOT get caught on top in bad weather. Be aware of high terrain and narrow valleys making IFR operations foolish. No FAA inspectors out here, so do what you can, just DON'T wreck my planes :)

LEGS IN DETAIL
Juneau (PAJN) to Gustavus (PAGS)
Starting out easy so you can get the feel for this big pig of a propliner. Try full ailerons yet? pretty sluggish.
Helpful Hints:
There are some mountains between PAJN and PAGS, but nothing serious. You can follow all water if weather is low.
Gulkana is on a huge flat area...long runway, no challenge. This is a warmup leg, remember?!?

Gustavus (PAGS) to Haines (PAHN)
More mountains enroute...fully waterway flyable in bad weather.
Helpful Hints:
If the ceiling is less than 4500 or so, better stick to the waterways.
Haines has a slightly shorter runway, but still pretty easy in the Convair.

Haines (PAHN) to Skagway (PAGY)
Short leg with some hills in the way, no biggie.
Helpful Hints:
Skagway airport's runway is a bit shorter, and in a box canyon, but still easy, right?
Pretty much a one way runway in Skagway, especially in the piggy Convair!
You can get there fully following waterways if you choose.

Skagway (PAGY) to Teslin, Canada (CYZW)
Finally a longer leg up into the backwoods of Canada, eh? Don't forget your passport...or fly really low!
Helpful Hints:
There is no waterway route on this leg, so be sure to check the weather. High Terrain everywhere.
This is really backwoods, don't crash here - nobody will find you!
Long runway, so if you make it, no problems.

Teslin, Canada (CYZW) to Atlin, Canada (CYSQ)
Easy hop over some hills to another gravel strip in Canada. Take a breath on this one.
Helpful Hints:
Enjoy the scenery.
Teslin is on a huge lake, easy to find.
Runway is a bit short, but nothing serious.
