Route 6
by Ron Jorgensen - MTN1652
This route can be flown with any Amphibian/Float aircraft you wish. It is designed for flight at low altitudes. Varying weather is suggested to change the difficulty of the flights. Splash flights are VFR ONLY! No autopilot either!! If you want to fly high watching an autopilot, this division is not for you.
Departure Point - CAB5 (Bronson Creek, Canada)
Arrival Point - 68A (Wrangell, AK)
Approximate distance = 55NM
Map
of the route on real sectional chart - doesn't quite make it to
Bronson Creek, but close enough.
Ron's Advice: Depart Bronson Creek on R/W 03 and IMMEDIATELY turn to the left and pick up the river. Follow the river (Stikin River) until it appears to come to a dead end (about 15 min). Here bear to the left staying in the center of the river. There are numerous islands along the way so keep a close eye on the river. About 22 minutes into the flight the river splits (a Y), Take the left side.
About 30 minutes into the flight you will be able to see the town and runway at Wrangell. I landed parallel to the runway in the bay.
JY's Advice: Once you make the turn to the river at takeoff, you are almost home free. Get out your camera and enjoy the views as you cruise along at 500 feet. Take a wrong turn and it could end up badly, but you wouldn't do that now, would you?
How Tough Do You Want it to Be?
| Difficulty Rating | Set your weather to... |
| Easy | Fair weather, light winds, good visibility - good for sightseeing only, no challenge |
| Moderate | 2000 Broken / 8 miles visibility / 10 knot winds (any direction you wish) |
| Tough | 1000 overcast / 3 miles visibility / moderate precip / 15 knots + gusts |
| Downright Sporty! | 500 overcast / 1 mile visibility / Heavy precip / 25knots + gusts |
