Twin Tour..."PV6"

This is basically a tour of beautifully rugged, Southern Oregon, and North California

This route is designed for piston twins, and has been tested with the Cessna G-Eagle, Howard 500, and the default Baron, you'll find in some area's of this tour, you'll need all the "grunt" these planes can offer......'course, with 2500 horse's, the Howard, is way out front, in this respect!

You'll be visiting ten airports, and covering 270 miles, the shortest strip, is 900ft, but there's ample run-off space"...some of these are challenging, not only on approach, but also departure!......so hopefully, everyone gets a fun flight

When we get to Trinity Center, we take a break for an hour, swap for a float plane/whatever, and just explore this leisure area, before we get a little serious again!

All compass headings are approximate....as normal, kick-off on the heading, then it's up to you....that's "Venture's" for ya!

First Leg...North Bend "KOTH" to Calvert Peak OR73

Leave Noth Bend, and get a heading approx 140d, fly that for 20 miles, Calvert Pk, sits on a mountain top at 3800ft, it's got a 1600ft asphalt strip......be aware!

Leg 2
Calvert to Winkle Bar "OR74"

Now be more aware!....900ft grass, Alt 500ft, take-off on 227dgs, when airborn, turn left, to about 180dgs, after no more than about 40 seonds, you'll see a valley running about 155dgs, turn right, to follow the valley, then immediatley, on your right, you should spot Winkle Bar strip, approach hdg, about 219dgs

Leg 3
Winkle to Wonder "6OR6"
1100ft grass, Alt 1200ft

Unscathed?...ok, we fly out r/w heading around 050dgs, we need some serious "grunt" here, there's some climbing to do, once airborne we can follow a valley bearing right, till we gain some height, we need a hdg of 150dgs
"Wonder" is tucked away in the hills, near two twisting highways, nothing to tricky here!

Leg 4
Wonder to Holdana Field "38OR"
..1100ft Dirt, Alt 1500ft

Leaving Wonder, we need more "grunt"...some climbing to do, before we can get a hdg of 110dgs, its only 14 miles, across some mountains, then you'll see Holdana nestling in the scrub below....not to difficult, just be aware, as always.

Leg 5
Holdana to Round Mountain "CA09"
1500 Grass, Alt 3500ft

Leave Holdana on a r/w hdg of about 100dgs, and start serious climbing, we can follow a valley to the right, till were able to get a hdg of 130dgs, keep climbing, we shall be needing near 7000ft!
Round Mountain is not hard to spot, but you come across it a little suddenly,......touch-down, and you've landed in California!

Leg 6
Round Mtn to Trinity Center "O86"
3200ft Asphalt, Alt 2300ft

Take-off and turn to the south, or about 160 dgs, we've got about 55 miles to go, so you get a chance to use the AP, (briefly!) set the AP for 9000ft or more, and just cruise, The 14000ft,Mt Shasta (climbed by 15000 people a year!) should be on your left, if it's not.....somethings not quite right!
In a few minutes you will be approaching the scenic Lake Trinity, soon as you spot it, it's time to descend, about 3 miles down the lake, on the righthand side, is Trinity Center airstrip, no problems with this landing!

Take a Break!

Take an hour (Yep, its logable!...just include it your flight time) to explore this area, swap plane's for a float/bush/172/whatever, if you head SE over a mountain range a few miles, you come to Bridge Bay resort, worth a look

Fire up, your twin!
Leg 7
Trinity to Hayfork "Q72"
4000FT asphalt, Alt 2300ft

We head out at 140 dgs, following the lake, and gaining height, then get a heading of about 200dgs, its a bit over 30 miles to Hayfork, on the way, we shall pass over "Pool" airstrip, not long after, you'll see Hayfork, you should be "more or less" on course, to fly straight in, again, be aware!

Leg 8
Hayfork to Silver Crk Ranch "41CA"
1500FT Grass, Alt 2500

You'll want a heading of about 200dgs, for this 14 mile trip, Siver Crk is tucked into the mountains, and Silver Crk IS tricky!......you might want to circle it, (favorite!) before you decide on an approach!

Leg 9
Silver Crk to Dinsmore "Q25"

Facing 310dgs at Silver Ck, for take-off, here we need "grunt"...soon as wer'e airborn, bear left, to follow a valley, and gain height, then we want a hdg of about 282dgs, to take us to Dinsmore, only 14 miles and is easily spotted from a distance.
You should have no real problems here, apart from trees!

Leg 10
Dinsmore to Eureka Mun "O33"
2500ft Asphalt, Alt 19ft

Leave to Dinsmore, and get a hdg of about 280 dgs, you've got about 35 miles, and your done!
Just keep flying approx 280, till you see the ocean, look down, and "Eureka"! the airstrips down there, located on a strip of land, surrounded by water on three sides, almost an island!.....and dead easy!

Hope you enjoy it, and discover this part of the US...it was new to me, but after flying this route x amount of times, I feel almost like a local!:)

Time taken for this route, including 1 hour leisure break, is around 3.5 to 4 hours

Though this route is designed for a piston twin, anyone who doesn't feel comfortable with that, can fly any plane he choose's too, it still counts, log the hours, Flight- "PV6"
